It doesn’t matter if you’re working out inside, exploring outside, or just sitting around the house–staying hydrated is an absolute necessity. Unfortunately, too many of us are still reaching for plastic bottles instead of reusable water bottles when it comes time to refuel. Not only is that contributing to the world’s major plastic problem, but it’s also leading to negative health effects-like exposure to BPA and other harmful chemicals – that are directly impacting your quality of life.

The answer? Start using reusable water bottles instead. But, like many things in life, that’s a task that could seem easier said than done. After all, if you have spent any amount of time searching for a reusable bottle, you have undoubtedly been met with options that sweat, fail to insulate, or otherwise don’t meet your expectations.

The fact is, using the right reusable bottle isn’t just better for your health and the health of the planet. That’s because, if you choose a good reusable bottle, you’ll also get all sorts of other perks that you’d never experience with a standard plastic bottle. The tricky part is choosing the right one.

To help, here’s a handy guide so that you can pick out the right reusable bottle for your needs without breaking the bank.

Choose A Material

“Anything but plastic” might be a start, but it won’t get you the best possible reusable bottle. In reality, reusable water bottles come in a variety of materials. Which one is right for you depends on your preferences and usage.

Stainless Steel

Durable and long lasting, stainless steel will prove to be a great choice if you want a bottle that’s low maintenance and droppable. Plus, when it does reach the end of its life, your stainless steel bottle will be recyclable. And, in the meantime, most are dishwasher safe!

The cons? It’s a heavier option and it can heat up when left in the sun. With that said, it’s BPA-free and a particular favorite amongst campers and people in need of a bottle that can take some tumbles.

If you care about looks, though, be mindful that the paint can peel over time. These bottles usually aren’t microwave safe, either and they are usually pricier than other options due to their durability and strength.

Everyone loves glass bottles because they never absorb the color or taste of what you put inside them. That means the freshest tasting water every time without any aftertaste. Glass bottles are also extremely long lasting–so long as you’re careful not to drop them.

Glass is also capable of holding both hot and cold liquids, something some other materials can’t lay claim to. Most glass bottles are also dishwasher safe. The biggest concern is fragility and weight. With that said, the non-permeable materials make for a great taste and absolutely no health risks.

Both lightweight and recyclable, there are many advantages to choosing an aluminum water bottle. They are most popular amongst travelers or for other activities where keeping weight low is a big concern. However, you’ll want to be careful with an aluminum bottle because they will dent very easily. These bottles also heat up when left out in hot temperatures.

Aluminum bottles are BPA-free. They’re also trendy and environmentally friendly, but you’ll want to be wary of the lack of insulation and their fragility in freezing temperatures.

Why BPA Free?

With all of this talk about BPA and general health and safety, you may be wondering why BPA is considered so bad. BPA stands for Bisphenol-A and it’s a hormone-disrupting chemical that comes from many metal cans and polycarbonate materials.

While prevalent, research has linked BPA to many long-term health issues. It can create multiple breast cancer cells, for instance, and even cause birth defects and diabetes. Since it disrupts the delicate hormonal balance within the body, its effects are far-reaching.

Fortunately, most reusable water bottle manufacturers realize the importance of offering BPA-free products and all of the water bottles from are BPA-free.

Special Features

Chances are, you never thought you’d put this much thought into buying a water bottle–but it’s actually a worthwhile research process. Just a couple added features can go a long way in helping you get the most use out of your bottle while enjoying convenience in your on-going quest for healthy hydration. Here’s a look at some features you may want.

Lid Style

The main feature you might expect to see on a reusable water bottle is the carabiner handle. The built-in loop on the top of the cap allows you to easily hang the bottle from your belt, bag, or backpack, or you can loop your finger through it for easy carrying.

But, there are some other things the lid might be sporting. A built-in straw, for instance, can allow you to drink more easily without having to twist off the entire cap to do so. On the other hand, if you want to be able to guzzle down large sips of water fast, you might prefer a twist-off top. The final option is a push and pull spout that gives similar functionality to a straw while being more spill proof.

You may also find reusable bottles that feature a dome cover over the flip spout or pull top, helping to protect the otherwise exposed drinking surface from dirt and bacteria. This is ideal if you are using a bottle for camping or outdoors in general.

Finally, the lid on your water bottle might even be hiding a built-in filter. This helps to remove impurities from whatever water you happen to be drinking, and it’s great if you want to be able to refill directly from the spout or you if you just want that extra purity.

Some reusable water bottles come with infusers built in, which allow you to add some fruit or ice to your drink.

However, you might find it more cost-effective and versatile to buy an infuser insert separately, which you can fill up and drop into the bottle when you want to use it. Then, on days when you don’t want to use it, just leave it out. A separate contraption can also make cleaning everything easier.

Also, instead of using an ice infuser or ice cubes at all, try reusable ice “cubes” which come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Buy a handful of them and keep them in the freezer so you can always grab some when you need them. This allows you to keep any beverage cool without fear of the ice melting and watering it down.

One major consideration for the average gym-goer is the ability to use a shaker ball inside. After all, many protein powders and drink mixes simply can’t be consumed until they are thoroughly dissolved. And, trying to do so by simply shaking a bottle of water will prove ineffective. So, since no one wants to bring a spoon to the gym, the shaker bottle was invented.

If you don’t already know, a shaker bottle is just like a normal bottle–except it has a handy little food-grade, stainless steel wire ball that you pop inside. Shake the bottle like normal and the ball does most the work. These shaker balls even help you mix up the thickest of ingredients to perfection.

In the case of the Elite Athlete shaker bottle, you get everything you need to mix things up and the ability to take the ball out as you please, leaving you with a normal water bottle for your favorite beverages.

Vacuum Sealed and Insulated

When buying a reusable bottle, most people opt for one that is vacuum sealed and insulated, and for good reason. Choosing such a bottle means you can keep your drinks at the perfect temp and double walls means you will never have to deal with aggravating condensation (or “sweat) on your bottle ever again.

If you’re looking for an insulated bottle, try the standard Muve bottle in black or teal.

Try More Than One

If you take on a lot of activities, it might be worth investing in a couple of different reusable bottles. Not only will this give you the chance to use one while another is in the dishwasher (on days where you just can’t bring yourself to stand at the sink after a long workout), but it will also give you the chance to enjoy a multitude of features to fit your lifestyle.

For instance, you might choose a lightweight traveller bottle to take with you on your trips. But, you might find a wide-mouth, large capacity bottle to be best for camping where you may want to use a water filter.
